ABOUT
THE CLUB
The
club was formed in 1923 with the title of 'Brook and Sandhills Cricket
Club' (Sandhills being the hamlet adjacent to Brook). In these early days -
and indeed up to and including the Second World War, keenly contested
matches were played against other local village sides, with post match
entertainment across the road at the Dog and Pheasant - and nothing has
changed. As with the pub, the Pirrie Hall has been a feature of Brook since
the beginning; the front area has always been the pavilion for the
cricketers, with the main body of the building being used for local
community activities.
After
the war horizons expanded; the fixture list including clubs from further
afield, from the South Coast to London, and quality players arrived. The
wandering club, Sydenhurst Ramblers (originally a country house team from
the Sydenhurst estate a few miles away), also started at that time and
remains very closely linked to Brook.
Up
until the late 1980s Brook continued to play friendly cricket with two
Saturday and Sunday sides, and a Colts team for the youngsters. The pressure
for league cricket however was irresistible if the club was to continue to
attract good players, and so in 1988 the Surrey League was joined, which was
celebrated by the 1st XI being champions immediately. Success has been
achieved
in a number of summers, and Brook continues to field a
1st and 2nd XI in the Surrey Championship on Saturdays, a Sunday side with
high grade club opposition, and there are Club tours every two years. In 2005, the 1st XI won Division 3
of the Surrey Championship, won Division 2 in 2007, as well as the
limited overs knockout competition, the Flora Doris Cup. Now amongst the top 20 clubs in Surrey,
having comfortably maintained 1st Division status and retained the Flora Doris Cup
in 2008, 2009 saw the 2nd XI promoted and also marked, for the first
time, the introduction of a very successful Development XI for our young players,
and in 2010 both 1st and 2nd XIs enjoyed successful League seasons
The achievement of Clubmark Accreditation in October 2010 is an important
step in confirming that our Club operates to a key set of core criteria and
has in place good practice to ensure that we can deliver high quality
community cricket in an environment that is safe, effective and
child-friendly
In 2011 an Academy is to be formed for developing
local young players, with
matches played in the Surrey Trust League, and a realistic aim is for the
1st XI is to reach the Premier Division of the Surrey Championship.
The
picturesque ground in its rural setting and with its excellent wicket
remains a popular venue for cricketers from far and wide - including
overseas touring sides.
