ABOUT
THE CLUB
The
club was formed in 1923 with the title of 'Brook and Sandhills Cricket
Club' (Sandhills being the hamlet adjacent to Brook). In these early days -
and indeed up to and including the Second World War, keenly contested
matches were played against other local village sides, with post match
entertainment across the road at the Dog and Pheasant - and nothing has
changed. As with the pub, the Pirrie Hall has been a feature of Brook since
the beginning; the front area has always been the pavilion for the
cricketers, with the main body of the building being used for local
community activities
After
the war horizons expanded; the fixture list including clubs from further
afield, from the South Coast to London, and quality players arrived. The
wandering club, Sydenhurst Ramblers (originally a country house team from
the Sydenhurst estate a few miles away), also started at that time and
remains very closely linked to Brook
Up
until the late 1980s Brook continued to play friendly cricket with two
Saturday and Sunday sides, and a Colts team for the youngsters. The pressure
for league cricket however was irresistible if the club was to continue to
attract good players, and so in 1988 the Surrey League was joined, which was
celebrated by the 1st XI being champions immediately. Success has continued
in a number of summers, and Brook continues to field a
1st and 2nd XI in the Surrey Championship on Saturdays, a Sunday XI with
high grade club opposition, and another Sunday side, the Strollers, who also
tour regularly. In 2005, the 1st XI won Division 3
of the Surrey Championship, won Division 2 in 2007, as well as the
limited overs knockout competition, the Flora Doris Cup, and now in
2008 plays in Division 1 and is amongst the top 20 clubs in Surrey.
The Flora Doris Cup was recently retained .
The
picturesque ground in its rural setting and with its excellent wicket
remains a popular venue for cricketers from far and wide - including
overseas touring sides.
