A decent but by no means
safe total was reached by Brook, with half the runs coming from the lower
order, in this potentially 'must win' match. What drama there was came
right at the end, after Walton had advanced confidently at the required
rate towards their target. On 187-1 at 44.3 overs - 22 runs required to
win from 33 balls, they will still be wondering how they failed to cross
the finish line. Brook, through the great work of George Adolphus with 2-7
in his last 2.3 overs and James 'Trev' Procter's 1-8 in his last 3,
managed to contain Walton to 17 runs (15 off the bat and 2 leg byes) in
the last 5.3 overs, and the loss of three wickets, to come home by 4 runs.
Before that the other bowlers had played their part with, in the
context of limited overs cricket, very economical spells. So, a second
successive narrow win; what will Saturday's last match of the campaign at
Epsom bring ?

With a significant number
of what might be termed 'regulars' not available for this match, and
facing a side that are already relegated, this match was probably
always going to be tricky to negotiate successfully. The prospect,
ideally, was for just for a decent game of cricket without some of the
negatives that tend to go with league cricket - and generally this held
good. Jon King won the toss and asked the visitors to bat, who in turn
began well until a well taken caught and bowled from Sam Keir broke the
partnership. Wickets then fell - largely due to the pressure of economical
bowling by King and Simon Bennison (who also took an excellent reflex
catch at short leg). However matters rather got away later on when the
opposition skipper put bat to ball very effectively - so that what was
looking like a chase of around 150, became, at the end, 200+ and a rate of
4.3
There was a cautious start
against reasonable bowling and no real momentum was developed until Jack
Katzler batting like he had a party to get to and was already late (he
did, and he was) got things going. With the rest of the middle order
failing to perform to any degree it was the last three, Martin Underwood
with a positive and engaging 20, Manoj Swarnapuri mixing the rapier with
the bludgeon, and the inimitable and not out Alan Hardy, who gave the
final score some respectability - but some way short of the target.
Statto
says :
With his
third run, and after an odyssey beginning in 1975, Martin Underwood
reached 1000 Club runs (but it is only fair to add at he was
undoubtedly already past this milestone because a complete record of all
stats is not held).

An overcast afternoon met
the Strollers as they gathered (more or less all at once) for a 40 overs a
side match at the Avorians attractive tree lined ground. The hosts batted
first and their opener Steve Frise immediately launched what transpired to
be a match winning blitz on the Strollers front line attack of Oakes x 2
(Tim and Simon). When things had calmed down, after Frise had fallen to an
excellent and calmly taken catch by John Prynne at very deep long-on, the
run rate was gradually brought to sane proportions (ie about 7 an over),
helped by good spells from Alex Manley, John Prynne, and the 10 year old George Frise (son of... and
guesting for the Strollers), which included bowling his uncle first ball. A heavy shower brought an interruption to the
second half of the innings, so it was agreed that 35 overs each would
constitute the match, but the hosts got away a little in the closing overs,
which included the completion of a good century from a home youngster,
making the target 216 at just over 6s.
Simon Swainson and John
Prynne started steadily - the latter still searching for some form, and it
was just his luck to be picked up caught and bowled from an extremely firm
drive. James Straker was immediately looking for runs - and got them, and
their 2nd wicket stand kept the team reasonably in touch with the rate,
but he and Swainson left the stage with still a lot of work to do. In
support of the assertive and hard hitting Alex Manley, the middle order
did not get going, and Manners was left to encourage Brian Davenport to
run up and down the wicket in an unseemly and challenging manner whilst he
smote the crimson rambler to all parts. The match was played out
positively under a finally clear blue sky, but it was sadly all in vain at
the end; if only a couple more overs had been available....But, a
thoroughly proper and enjoyable Sunday afternoon meeting, played in an
excellent spirit (top tea too)
Statto
says :
Simon
Swainson and James Straker are now within close striking distance of Club
run aggregate landmarks; Simon 15 for 8000, James 45 for 5000
