MATCH REPORTS

SATURDAY 16th AUGUST - 1ST XI v FARNHAM

Needing a win to be reasonably certain of retaining Division 1 status, a home match against bottom placed Farnham should have been the ideal opportunity to achieve this - and so it proved. Batting first, Matt Swarbrick (37) and Esmund Van Wyk (55) were the main contributors, and input from Harry Schofield with 21 and Ollie Fernie with 17 helped the cause, but there was not much else offered, and a total of 155 would not have seemed to give that much room for manoeuvre in the process of taking ten wickets. However the visitors were essentially destroyed by the outstanding bowling of Esmund Van Wyk, who returned a season's best analysis of 7-27 in his 13 overs, including a hat trick, supported by James Proctor with 2-11, and the captain with 1-13. At one point Farnham were 28-9, but the last pair held out to take the score to 72 - 83 short of their requirement. Three matches to complete the campaign, to consolidate, and to finish on a high.

SATURDAY 16th AUGUST - 2ND XI v CRANLEIGH

Any lingering hopes of advancement were stilled at Cranleigh when a team one short, with a bias towards maturity, and a limited bowling attack, could not successfully chase what looked like a large but arguably gettable target. Despite some tight early bowling from Richard Chibisa and skipper Ben Candy, the home team, on their large ground, struck freely giving few chances and declared on 228-4 after 50.5 overs. Chibisa tirelessly bowled unchanged from one end to take 2-108 in his 25 overs, Candy 1-67 in his 20, and Toby Pheasant 1-30. A sensibly cautious start from Sam Keir and Toby Pheasant got the reply under way, but they went for 16 and 22 respectively, with the mantle then passing to Adam Judd (34) and skipper Candy (22). A big individual innings was needed but didn't happen, the rate required was always ahead of that achieved, and in due course the draw became the realistic option. Brian Davenport (29) and Julian Ince, using all their experience, held out for a good while - indeed until 10 minutes from the finish time, but then the final wickets fell and the innings closed on 158 - 70 short

SUNDAY 17th AUGUST - SUNDAY XI v BUCCANEERS

A dullish day, but no rain, nevertheless produced an entertaining day's cricket against long time opponents the Buccaneers. The Sunday XI, with some guest artists from the Strollers, batted first and at lunch were a respectable, but not dominating, 114-3 in 30 overs. Leading the way was Simon Swainson with 20, but the not out batters at the break were Toby Pheasant and Sam Keir. After Mufti munchings, Pheasant departed the stage after a belligerent 68, to be succeeded by a stand of 99 between Keir and Richard Chibisa, both of whom achieved half centuries (for both of them the second of the season), and which ended with the score at 229. Skipper Esmund Van Wyk called the batters in shortly after with the total on 245-7 - a very fair ask. Despite an early breakthrough, a catch behind from Tim Copeman off the probing and economical Tim Oakes, and then a run out, wickets were elusive to the point of only one more being taken; a catch in the deep by Simon Oakes off Swainson. The skipper was doing his best to give everyone their piece of cricket on the day, and yet still win - but these objectives remained exclusive to each other, the visitors completing a 7 wicket win with 6 overs to spare.

Statto says :

Esmund Van Wyk has now scored 1153 Club runs, and is 3rd in the all time seasonal aggregate list behind Greg Lamb 1368 in 1999 and Tom Williams 1229 in 1995 (see Archive > Batting). He has also taken 80 Club wickets this summer - second in the list behind Jonathan Ashworth who snared 96 in 1988 (see Archive > Bowling).
